When is the best time to come for my ultrasound?

In our experience the best 3D/4D images are captured between 27 and 34 weeks. In the case of twins we suggest appointments between 24 and 28 weeks. Gender determination scans can be performed as early as 15 weeks however ensure you allow enough time between the reveal and ultrasound, just incase baby is a bit shy. If the ultrasound purpose is to provide reassurance, scans can be done at anytime from 10 weeks as long as your pregnancy due date has been determined by a diagnostic ultrasound.

What is the difference between 2D, 3D, 4D and 5D ultrasound?

All ultrasounds use sound waves to create an image. 2D (Two dimensional) ultrasound is the commonly seen grey-scale image used at your Dating, Nuchal and Morphology diagnostic ultrasound scans. 3D (Three dimensional) ultrasound uses a computer program to generate a more realistic image while 4D (Four dimensional) ultrasound uses a computer program to generate a video of the 3D image. In turn, 5D (Five dimensional) ultrasound is the rendering of the 3D images and the 4D clips to have a more life like “in the womb” appearance.

Will I get clear images?

At Baby bump we strive to obtain the best images possible at the time of your scan. Some factors that may hinder image quality include baby’s position, placental position, amount of amniotic fluid, maternal body type and how active baby is at the time of the scan. If baby is a bit shy and no images were obtained we will rebook you for another attempt at no extra cost.

Will you be able to tell babies gender?

At Baby bump we will endeavor to do our best to determine baby's gender if requested. Occasionally, it may be a bit tricky since some factors like developmental phase, fetal position, cord position and maternal body type could influence the clarity of the scan. If baby is unco-operative on the day we will reschedule you to return at no extra cost until we can accurately determine baby’s gender. For this reason, we advise that if you are planniing a gender reveal that you allow some time between your appoinment and the reveal.

What if we want to keep babies gender a surprise?

Not a problem, just be sure to let us know when you arrive. That way we can tailor the scan not to give away the surprise.

Is ultrasound safe?

Prenatal ultrasound has been used by the medical industry and is common practice throughout pregnancy to monitor the developing fetus. Ultrasound has no known harmful effects and for further information on the recommendation of the use of ultrasound by RANZCOG (Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) please visit

Is this a medical ultrasound?

Baby bump ultrasounds are non-diagnostic, they provide no medical advice, fetal measurements or diagnosis. The purpose of Baby bump ultrasounds is to provide keepsake images and do not replace ultrasound investigations ordered by your doctor. Due to the elective non-diagnostic nature of the ultrasound you will not need a referral and thus you will not be eligible for a rebate or be able to claim from your private health fund.

Close Questions
What can I do in preparation for my appointment?

If your scan is to take place before 14 weeks we ask that you arrive with a full bladder. The bladder acts as a window in earlier pregnancies ensuring the bladder displaces any structures that could obscure visualisation of baby. Research has shown that being hydrated influences the amount of amniotic fluid. So we have a better chance of visualising baby if you are hydrated. Ensure that you drink 8 glasses of water the day of, and the week leading up to your appointment. Wear a separate top and bottom to your appointment to easily expose your Baby bump for the ultrasound.

How many people can I bring along?

We allow up to 6 additional guests. Please note we can comfortably accommodate 4 guests with seating, additional guests will have to squeeze in or have a seat on the carpet. Please know that children are always welcome and we encourage siblings to be present. There is a carpet and toy box for siblings to play on. I found the inclusion of my son during our ultrasound made it more of a reality and helped him transition from only child to big brother.

When will I receive my printed images and/ or USB?

Printed images and USB with digital images/video included in relavent packages will be given to you at the end of your appointment.

What happens if I cannot make my appointment?

As a curtousy we ask that you reschedule your appoinment at least 48 hours prior to the time, this allows other clients on our waiting list the oppurtunity to see their bub. If you miss your appointment, you will have to rebook your appoinment online.

Why do I have to pay a deposit?

We ask that you pay a deposit of $20 to secure your appoinment time. This ensures that “no shows” do not limit the booking times of other clients.

What payment methods are accepted?

Methods of payment include cash, debit/credit card and PayPal. If paying by cash please ensure you have the correct amount for the package chosen as we do not always have change available.
